Before people had bandages, they used cobwebs for covering cuts. I am fascinated by both the fragile, transparent appearance of a spider’s web and yet the physical strength, support and protection it offers. This video installation under a dark stairwell is about creating one’s own space both metaphorically and physically. The spider creates it’s habitat –it’s safety net- from the secretions of it’s own body. The web structure in front of my video projection is made completely of my own hair. Like the spider I depended on my own body's involuntary production (growing hair) to create my space --my habitat. To me this is the opposite of our very complex human condition—depending on others for our survival. Filtering the idea through acts of a spider, the video creates a relationship between my body and the space created by my own hair.
